September 7, 2026

This past week, I witnessed a rare and hilarious dance. Earlier in the morning, Nancy decided to work until she figured out how to use the keyless garage entry pad. Three years ago, when we moved into our house, a locksmith tried to fix it, and also was unsuccessful. But  after about six videos on YouTube, a solution finally worked.  That final video was so simple that Nancy  was left speechless. Not only did she feel rather foolish, but instead, she laughed so hard that she couldn’t stop.   Hence, her happy dance that even I found too silly for an old lady!

From my perspective, determined to maintain a lighthearted tone, I believe Nancy’s stubbornness turned into a source of humor. Having lived with Nancy for years, I know that her stubbornness can be quite annoying at times. I believe it all began with the need to update their house after their air conditioner failed last week. After several other mishaps and estimates for the house updates, including furnace and water softener, she declared, “Okay, now I’m going to work on that keyless entry until I get it!”   I could see by Greg’s reaction that he thought, “No way, will I even reply to that declaration!”   So, we patiently watched her watch those videos and go in the garage to try different attempts.

How about you?   When was the last time you fixed something yourself by learning the solution on YouTube?   Oh, by the way, I am so glad that Nancy did not attempt or consider fixing the air conditioner herself.  I guess she is not that stubborn.   She says that her Dad always figured out so many creative ways to fix farm equipment before calling someone. Think about it, that was all before the internet too!   For your information, she also does not attempt to figure out any of my health issues by herself because my Vet and my breeder who is a Vet are incredible.

Instead of sharing a photo of the keyless garage door, I’ll share a photo taken a few mornings ago. Please share your YouTube video stories or your stories about when your stubbornness paid off.

  1. I’m learning more about grit and grace, and it takes a little bit of both to accomplish anything in this life. So good for you, Nancy, you have always shown us that you have a lot of grit , and I happen to know that God extends his grace then to you as well! I’m not surprised that you fixed the garage door. That’s pretty awesome. Have a great day!

  2. Rather than stubbornness, which I think carries a negative perception, I like to think of it as determination! And good for Nancy for persisting and trying different solutions until she figured it out. I can’t think of a specific story other than one that’s too long to write here about attaching chair legs (ask me sometime, it is quite funny!), but I’m sure my family has countless examples! My parents always said that humor is God’s gift to getting by in this world and I couldn’t agree more. What a beautiful photo of a late summer/early fall morning!
