January 31, 2025: Healthy Goals
For the umpteenth time, I am witnessing yet another attempt for my dear companion to get in shape. This one, I can not relate to because I have never had to worry about extra pounds. In fact, I am quite the opposite, I am always told to gain a few pounds. Anyhow, back to OUR mission because apparently, I am a huge part of her new healthy goal to lose quite a bit of weight. This is her gift to herself for her birthday in a few months. Some other health scares have also prompted her to lose these extra pounds. I can relate to getting older because I am already 9 years old which is considered a senior in dog years.
Some may ponder what brought on this new revelation? She says it was a series of breakdowns. First, it was walking past some mirrors. Then, it was some students staring at her as if she had something on her face. But, the last straw according to Nancy was that none of her clothes fit her at all. Just for the facts, we are talking about a clothes hog here.
It is a win win or “harmonious” situation for me because not only will she use her treadmill sitting downstairs, she will take me on those walks and runs. Otherwise, do you know what it is like to live with someone who is on a serious diet? I may need some encouragement going forward here.

I don’t envy all of you in this situation! Loosing weight has always been a huge deal in most of our lives, given we’ve all been sold the “less is more” bill of goods all our lives. Due to large doses of Prednisone last year I gained 25 pounds instantly. I don’t like it – I don’t like how I look, or how my clothes fit, and I know it’s healthier to be on the leaner side. But – at 84 I am not exactly a fashionista (not that I ever was) and people don’t look at me anymore anyway. I can’t say I wouldn’t mind being a lot smaller but I am not going to sacrifice my quality of life for it. I also have a chubby little mini poodle and a big golden who could put on a few pounds. They don’t seem to mind how they look and they are doing just fine. I hope that for the rest of us – no matter WHAT size we are!
It’s always been a problem for most of us, it seems, to never be satisfied with how we look. I am trying to get past that.
Whoa….we are shocked to learn that you are 84 because you always look so beautiful! Yes, us dogs only care about the size of your heart, not your body! Happy New Year, Marvelous Mary!
